8 Ways to Help Your Child Do Well in School

  1. Show your child that their education is important to you. Set aside at least 20 minutes a day to read and discuss homework.
  2. Monitor their homework, helping them if they need it, but don’t do it for them.
  3. Read to or with your child and let them see you reading every day.
  4. Turn off the TV except for special shows or at agreed-upon times. Serve as a good role model-don’t spend all your time watching TV.
  5. Get to know your child’s teacher and request any help your child may need.
  6. Attend all parent-teacher conferences, PTA meetings and as many school events as possible. Learn about school rules and educational programs.
  7. Be sure that your child is properly supervised before and after school hours.
  8. Help your child feel good about him/herself. Children with good self-esteem are better students and grow up to be happier and healthier adults.

Student Savings Program

Every Thursday before school the Yolo Federal Credit Union will be on campus to help your child get a savings account started!

A Note from the Principal

Dear Families:

I would like to inform you that we have a new office clerk, Marisol Cabrera.  We are pleased to have her join our staff.  She has worked in the district and will help to support us with attendance.

This spring the National Honor Society from Woodland High School will help beautify our campus by painting murals on some of our exterior walls as part of a community service project.  We are requesting donations to help make the project possible.  You can help by donating any of the following items which can be dropped off in the office or room 9:  exterior paint (any color), paint brushes and rollers, drop clothes, paint pans, and painter’s tape.  We would like to have contributions by March 16th

As a part of BEST, our positive behavior system, we are currently reviewing our playground expectations and teaching school-wide lessons.  Lessons will include teaching students about various activities, proper use of equipment, and the importance of keeping our hands and feet to self.  If you are interested in being on our BEST team as a parent, please contact the front office.

Lastly, I wanted to share this website which lists various websites for parents and children from science to homework.  Check it out:  www.thebigproject.co.uk/parents/

Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to work with your child.

Sincerely,

Claudia Salvestrin, Principal

Facts about Reading Outside of School

  • 78% of juvinile crime is committed by high school dropouts.  These dropouts can be preicted with 70% accuracy by third grade based on reading ability.

Attendance Matters!

Good attendance is an important skill that will help children do will in school, college and a job.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. Starting in kindergarten, students can still fall behind if they keep missing just a day or two every few weeks.
  2. Absences can affect the whole class if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
  3. Schools lose money for educational programs because funding is based on attendance.

RESPONSIBILITY

Are you encouraging your child to be responsible?

Kids who are expected to pick up their socks are most successful as adults.  Seems crazy- but research shows that children who learn to be responsible are more likely to be successful throughout their lives.

Take the following quiz.  Answer "yes" or "no" to each question.

1.  My child has chores to do each day.

2. My child is responsible for the things he/she takes to school.

3. We have clear rules that my child is expected to follow.

4.  My child knows the consequences of not following the rules.

5.  I practice what I preach.  If I tell my child to pick up, I do it, too.

How did you do?  Each "yes" answer means you are helping your child be more responsible.
